Bolivia Embassy Attestation Fees 2026: Apostille Process from India

La Paz, Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Cochabamba run on Spanish paperwork, and the rules changed in 2018. Older blogs describing consular legalisation are out of date.

Current position: The Apostille Convention entered into force for Bolivia on 7 May 2018. Since then Bolivian migration, universities, the civil registry and companies accept an MEA apostille on Indian documents without any Bolivian consular stamp. Plan for a Spanish translation in Bolivia once the apostille is on.

From consular legalisation to apostille: what 2018 changed

Before May 2018 an Indian paper bound for Bolivia had to be attested by MEA and then legalised by a Bolivian consular officer, and afterwards often re-legalised by the Foreign Ministry in La Paz. That chain disappeared when Bolivia acceded to the Hague Convention. One MEA apostille now replaces all of it, which cuts both cost and waiting time.

The apostille itself is a printed sticker with a serial number and QR code. Officers at the Dirección General de Migración or a university registry can scan it to confirm it was issued for that specific document. This makes the sticker hard to forge, but it also means the original must arrive clean and untouched.

Marriage certificate attestation for Bolivia and other civil papers

Civil records such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, affidavit or divorce decree start with a notary where needed, pass through the Home Department of the issuing state (an SDM handles Delhi papers), and finish with the MEA apostille. A PCC from Passport Seva is the exception: it heads straight to MEA.

  • Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar under the Special or Hindu Marriage Act
  • Birth certificate from a municipal body
  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Single status or no-impediment affidavit
  • Experience certificate
  • Divorce decree, death certificate or medical fitness certificate

Commercial papers for Bolivian buyers

  • Certificate of Origin and commercial invoice
  • Free sale certificate and GMP certificate for medicines
  • Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP)
  • Distribution agreement and letter of authorisation

Bolivia FAQs

Is Bolivia embassy attestation still required for Indian documents?

No. Since 7 May 2018, when the Apostille Convention took effect for Bolivia, a Ministry of External Affairs apostille replaces legalisation by a Bolivian consulate for Indian public documents of every kind.

What are the Bolivia embassy attestation fees?

There is no consular fee. Our total charges are ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for a PCC, from ₹1,500 for a birth certificate and ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 for a marriage certificate. Degrees and trade papers are quoted individually.

How does degree certificate attestation for Bolivia work?

Your degree is verified by the state education department, then MEA applies the apostille. After it reaches Bolivia, a translator prepares a Spanish version. The Indian part usually takes one to three weeks.

Is marriage certificate attestation for Bolivia needed for my spouse's residence?

Bolivian migration normally asks for an apostilled marriage certificate when a spouse applies as a dependant. The certificate goes through the Home Department or SDM and then receives the MEA apostille.

Do documents for Bolivia need Spanish translation?

In most cases yes. Spanish is the main official language and Bolivian offices generally require a Spanish translation, prepared in Bolivia after the apostille so that the sticker is also translated.

Should I translate before or after the apostille?

After. If you translate first, the apostille text remains in English and many Bolivian offices will reject the set. Apostille the Indian original, then translate both the document and the sticker together.

How can a Bolivian office verify my Indian apostille?

The MEA apostille has a serial number and QR code. Scanning it or checking the number online confirms the issue details, so Bolivian authorities can verify it without contacting India.

Which documents does an Indian student need for a Bolivian university?

Usually apostilled Class 10 and 12 certificates, the degree for postgraduate study, and transcripts. Some universities also ask for a syllabus and birth certificate. Confirm with the admissions office first.

Can a pharmaceutical exporter apostille a COPP for Bolivia?

Yes. A Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product, GMP certificate or free sale certificate is certified by a Chamber of Commerce and then apostilled by MEA, which Bolivian importers and regulators generally accept.

How quickly can a PCC be apostilled for Bolivia?

A Passport Seva or RPO police clearance skips state verification and goes directly to MEA. It is often apostilled within about two to four working days after we receive it.

Can you courier the apostilled papers to La Paz or Santa Cruz?

Yes. We ship originals internationally to an address, employer or lawyer in Bolivia, or return them to you within India if you are carrying them yourself.
