Colombia Embassy Attestation: Why the Stamp You Are Looking For Has Not Existed Since 2001
Colombia embassy attestation is still the phrase Indians type into Google, and it has been the wrong phrase for a quarter of a century. Colombia joined the Hague Apostille Convention with effect from 30 January 2001, so an Indian document for Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena carries one MEA apostille and never goes near a Colombian consular counter.
Nobody in the Indian workforce today has ever genuinely needed Colombia embassy attestation. What people do need, and what almost every agent forgets to mention, is a Spanish translation that Colombian offices will accept. INFINITYGRO handles the Notary, SDM and MEA stages from our Delhi office and tells you plainly where the translation fits.
- ✓Colombia has accepted apostilles since 30 January 2001 — no consular stamp
- ✓One MEA apostille completes the chain for every Colombian authority
- ✓We flag the Spanish translation step that trips most files up
- ✓A written figure first; nothing moves until you agree it
The quick answer for Colombia
Quick answer Last updated 8 October 2026
Colombia accepts the Hague apostille, so Colombia embassy attestation is not a separate stage. An Indian public document for Colombia is notarised, attested by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Delhi and then given a numbered apostille by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Nothing afterwards goes to a Colombia embassy or consulate.
- Hague Apostille Convention
- Colombia is a contracting party
- Correct route from India
- Notary → Sub-Divisional Magistrate → MEA apostille
- Is an apostille accepted?
- Yes — it is the complete legalisation
- Is an embassy stamp needed?
- No — no Colombia mission stamp is required
- Who issues the stamp
- Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India

Does your document need Colombia embassy attestation, or an apostille?
Colombia does not attest Indian documents, and has not done so for twenty-five years. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Colombia on 30 January 2001. From that date a numbered apostille issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi is the complete and final legalisation of an Indian public document for use anywhere in Colombia.
That makes Colombia one of the oldest apostille jurisdictions in Latin America, which is why the persistence of the embassy-attestation story is so odd. The explanation is simple: agency websites copy one another, and nobody re-checks a page once it ranks. If a quotation lands in your inbox with a Colombian consular fee on it, the person who wrote it has never looked at the convention table.
Colombia runs its own apostille service in the other direction through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued electronically and verifiable online. So a Colombian document coming to India is apostilled in Colombia, and an Indian document going to Colombia is apostilled in Delhi. Two mirror processes, no embassy in either of them.
The entry-into-force date is published in the HCCH status table for Convention No. 12, linked below. It takes under a minute to confirm for yourself, and it is worth doing before you pay anybody.
The route an Indian document takes for Colombia
Three stages, all of them inside India, and the last one in New Delhi. The only real decision is whether your document needs a State-level authentication before the Ministry sees it, and that depends on the Colombian body receiving it rather than on the document. This is the whole of Colombia embassy attestation as it actually works.
Notary and SDM in Delhi, then the MEA apostille
The chain ends at the Ministry. Nothing travels to a Colombian office afterwards.
- Arranged by you
University, board or State authentication, only where it is specifically demanded
A handful of Colombian professional councils and one or two universities ask for the qualification to be verified or State-authenticated first. Most do not. Get it in writing before you spend on this stage, because it is the slowest and least predictable part of any file.

Notary Public and Sub-Divisional Magistrate attestation in Delhi
A Notary Public in Delhi enters and seals the document, then an SDM attests the notary's signature. This is the clearance the Ministry's apostille counter looks for on a fast-track file, and it is handled entirely by us.

MEA apostille
The Ministry of External Affairs affixes a numbered apostille sticker carrying a QR code to the reverse of the document. For Colombia this is the end of the legalisation chain. The translation, where one is needed, is arranged after this and never before.
Typically needed for: Colombian university admissions and credential recognition, Migración Colombia residence and visa files, marriage and civil registry matters, company incorporation, powers of attorney and court documents.
Before you pay anybody for Colombia embassy attestation, check this
Colombian requirements are set by the receiving body, not by a general rule, and they almost always include language. A university registrar, Migración Colombia, a notaría handling a property deed and a Chamber of Commerce registration each want something slightly different. Ask for the requirement in writing, in Spanish if that is what they issue, and read the translation clause carefully.
Personal, academic or company paperwork? The routes differ
Every country sorts incoming paperwork into the same three families, and each family travels a different road through the Indian system. Getting the family right is the whole game: a commercial document pushed down the personal route is rejected, and a personal document sent to a Chamber of Commerce goes nowhere. Here is what belongs where, and what happens at each stage of Colombia embassy attestation.
Personal and non-educational records
This group covers the records of a person's life rather than their qualifications. They are usually issued by a municipal body, a registrar or a police authority, and in Colombia embassy attestation only the issuing authority's own certificate can enter the chain.
What is in this group
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Single status certificate
- Police Clearance Certificate
- Medical certificate
- Divorce decree
- Name change deed
- Affidavit
- Succession certificate
- Adoption deed
The route
- Notary Public, in Delhi. A Notary enters the document in the register and applies a seal and signature. Nothing can move further up the chain without it.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- SDM attestation. A Sub-Divisional Magistrate verifies and attests the Notary's signature. It is the quicker of the two State-level options and is accepted by the Ministry for most destinations.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- The long option: Home Department of the issuing State. Some authorities will only accept the State's own GAD or Regional Attestation Centre stamp. It adds weeks and it is organised by you directly, not by us.Arranged by you
- Submission to the MEA. The Ministry compares the previous authority's seal with its records and affixes its numbered sticker. This is the stage that carries weight with Colombia. Walk-in lodgement by the public ended in 2012.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- MEA apostille — the final stage for Colombia. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Colombia is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Colombia embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage
Degrees, diplomas, marksheets and transcripts
Educational records are the slowest category in Colombia embassy attestation, and the reason is always the same: the State or university stage, where it is demanded, runs on somebody else's timetable rather than ours.
What is in this group
- Degree certificate
- Marksheets
- Transcripts
- Diploma certificate
- 10th certificate
- 12th certificate
- Provisional degree
- Course completion certificate
- Nursing certificate
- Syllabus / course content sheet
- Migration certificate
- School leaving certificate
The route
- Notarisation in Delhi. A Notary Public examines the original, enters it in the register and seals it. Skip this and the next counter will refuse the file outright.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- SDM, the fast-track option. Chosen over the issuing State's own department because it is quicker, happens in Delhi and satisfies the Ministry for nearly every destination.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Where SDM is refused: State HRD. The education department of the State that issued your qualification authenticates it, normally after the university has confirmed the award. Budget weeks for this branch and organise it yourself.Arranged by you
- MEA in New Delhi. Verification of the preceding signature, then the Ministry's numbered sticker on the reverse. This is the stamp Colombia authorities look for, and only registered agencies may lodge the file.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- MEA apostille — the final stage for Colombia. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Colombia is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Colombia embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage
Company, trade and export paperwork
Business documents are treated as the acts of a company rather than of a person, so in Colombia embassy attestation the Chamber of Commerce replaces the Notary and SDM stages that personal and educational records use.
What is in this group
- Commercial invoice
- Certificate of Origin
- Packing list
- Certificate of Incorporation
- Memorandum of Association (MOA)
- Articles of Association (AOA)
- Board Resolution
- Power of Attorney
- Memorandum of Understanding
- Distribution agreement
- Price list
- Free Sale Certificate
- GMP certificate
- Certificate of Analysis
- Bill of Lading
- Export documents
- Trade licence
- Letter of Authority
- Partnership deed
- GST registration certificate
The route
- Chamber of Commerce. The document is attested by a recognised Chamber, which confirms the company's standing. This is the commercial chain's own first stage and it stands in place of Notary and SDM.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- Ministry of External Affairs. Having checked the signature below, MEA applies its own numbered sticker to the reverse. For a document bound for Colombia this is the decisive stamp, and we lodge it on your behalf.Handled by INFINITYGRO
- MEA apostille — the final stage for Colombia. A numbered sticker with a QR code goes on the reverse of the document. Because Colombia is an Apostille Convention country there is no mission stage at all, and Colombia embassy attestation is simply the phrase people search for.Final stage
If you are unsure which of the three your document belongs to, send us a photograph of it. Mis-classification is the single most expensive mistake in Colombia embassy attestation, because a file sent down the wrong chain has to start again from the beginning.
Taken one document at a time
Colombia asks for very few document types but is particular about two things: the apostille must be on the original, and the Spanish rendering must be done by a translator Colombia recognises. Processing is the same throughout Colombia embassy attestation; the receiving body is what varies.
Degree certificate apostille for Colombia
A degree certificate apostille for Colombia is normally wanted for admission to a Colombian university, for convalidación of a foreign qualification through the education ministry, or by a professional council. The apostille goes on the original degree, and the transcript usually travels with it because convalidación files are assessed on course content.
Convalidación and admissionsDiploma, ITI and trade certificates
Polytechnic diplomas, ITI trade certificates and technical qualifications follow the identical apostille route. Colombian technical recognition bodies tend to want the syllabus or course-content sheet alongside the certificate, so send both in the same envelope.
Technical qualificationsBirth certificate apostille for Colombia
A birth certificate apostille for Colombia comes up in dependant visa files, school admission for children, and in registering a birth or a descent claim with the Colombian civil registry. Send the certificate issued by the municipal registrar; a hospital discharge slip is not a public document and cannot be apostilled.
Civil registry and dependantsMarriage certificate apostille for Colombia
A marriage certificate apostille for Colombia is asked for when registering a foreign marriage, applying for a spouse residence permit, or dealing with property held jointly. The registrar's certificate is the document that counts, not a ceremony record from a temple, church or gurdwara.
Spouse residencePolice Clearance Certificate
An Indian Police Clearance Certificate is a standard part of a Colombian residence application. It is apostilled exactly like any other public document, and because Colombian offices treat a PCC as a time-sensitive paper, start it close to the date you intend to file rather than months ahead.
PCCCommercial and company documents
Invoices, certificates of origin, board resolutions, MOA and AOA and distribution agreements need a Chamber of Commerce attestation before the Ministry. Colombian Chamber of Commerce registration and tax filings are where these usually land, and a Spanish translation is almost always part of the pack.
Chamber of Commerce firstWhere the money goes in Colombia embassy attestation
Colombia embassy attestation fees are, in truth, apostille fees, and a Colombian file is among the cheaper ones we see because there is no foreign mission charge at the end of it. What does move the figure is this.
1No consular stage at all
The largest single saving. A Colombian file stops at the Ministry in New Delhi, so you pay nothing to a foreign mission, unlike a Kuwait, Qatar or UAE file where the mission charge is often the biggest line.
2Whether a State authentication is demanded
If a Colombian council insists on State HRD authentication before the Ministry, that is a separate process you arrange and pay for directly. It adds weeks as well as money, which is why it is worth challenging.
3The Spanish translation
Not part of our quote, and often the second largest cost in a Colombian file. Price it separately and check who Colombia will accept as the translator before you commission anything.
4How many documents share the journey
A degree, a transcript, a PCC and a birth certificate sent together travel as one file rather than paying four times over.
5Courier and urgency
Tracked courier both ways from outside Delhi costs more than dropping documents here and collecting them, and a genuine deadline that needs a file moved ahead of the queue is priced differently from a routine one.
Both the degree certificate fees page and the diploma certificate fees page set the charges out stage by stage. For your particular set, a photograph on WhatsApp brings a written quote back.
Colombia embassy attestation: what the Spanish translation rule actually means
This is the part that costs Indians money and time, and almost no page covers it, so it is worth being precise. The apostille is not your problem. The language is.
Colombian authorities work in Spanish. A document in English, however properly apostilled, is frequently returned by a notaría, a registrar or a university registrar unless a Spanish version accompanies it. The apostille legalises the Indian document; it says nothing about what language the receiving office reads.
Who may translate matters as much as the translation. Colombian offices commonly want a translation by a traductor oficial recognised in Colombia, and some will accept one certified by a Colombian consulate. A translation agency's letterhead in India is often not enough. Ask the receiving office precisely who they accept before you pay a translator anything.
Order of operations. Apostille the original first, then translate the apostilled document including the apostille text itself. Translating first and apostilling afterwards produces a file where the translation does not cover the final stamp, and that gets bounced.
Convalidación is slow, and the apostille is the easy part. Recognition of a foreign degree in Colombia is assessed on syllabus, credit hours and institutional standing. People lose months to that assessment and then blame the attestation. Start the recognition enquiry early and treat the apostille as the quick administrative step it is.
Send us the written requirement you received and you will get a straight answer about which stages you actually need. If the honest answer is that an apostille is not required at all, you will be told that too.
The edges of Colombia embassy attestation: what is not ours
We would rather set this out now than argue later. These stages are not part of Colombia embassy attestation as we provide it.
Someone else's stage
- Verification by the awarding institution. Applications to a university, State board or ITI are made by you, not by us.
- State HRD or home department authentication. Arranged by you; anything that department charges is paid to them.
- Spanish translation and convalidación filings. We do not translate documents or lodge recognition applications with Colombian authorities.
- Visa and permit charges. These go to the mission or online portal processing your application, never through us.
- Replacing a lost or spoiled document. That is a matter for whoever issued it in the first place.
As a private facilitation service we can move a file efficiently through the stages, but we cannot remove a stage or guarantee a decision that is not ours to make.
The set that starts the work
Once the Colombia embassy attestation question is settled and you know an apostille is what you need, this is the set that starts the work. These are what Colombia embassy attestation needs before a single counter is approached.
- ✓The original document, flat, unlaminated and undamaged
- ✓Transcripts or consolidated marksheets, where a university or council asked for them
- ✓The written requirement from the Colombian body, which decides the route
- ✓A passport copy, photo page and address page
- ✓The signed authorisation letter, from the template we email you
- ✓Return address and mobile number, unless you are collecting in person

This mission does not attest or legalise Indian documents. Because Colombia is an Apostille Convention country, the apostille is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and the chain ends there. We publish these details because people ask for them, and they are useful for visa and other consular enquiries — but do not take your documents here expecting a stamp.
Colombia embassy attestation: common questions answered
The questions we are asked most often about Colombia embassy attestation and about documents going to Colombia.
Do I need Colombian embassy attestation in India in 2026?
No. Colombia has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 30 January 2001, so Indian public documents for Colombia need an MEA apostille and nothing from a Colombian mission. Any quotation that includes a Colombian consular legalisation charge is working from information that was already out of date twenty-five years ago.
My Colombian university asked for a legalised degree. What do they mean?
In practice they mean an apostilled original plus a Spanish translation. University pages across Latin America still use the word legalised because the wording predates the convention. Ask the registrar to confirm in writing whether they want an apostille, a notarised copy, or records sent directly by your Indian university, because those are three different things.
Does the apostille need to be translated into Spanish as well?
Usually yes. Apostille the original first, then have the document and the apostille text translated together, so the Spanish version covers the final stamp. Translating before the apostille is applied is the commonest sequencing error we see on Colombian files and it means paying for the translation twice.
How long does an Indian apostille for Colombia take?
The Indian side is short: the Notary and SDM stages and then the Ministry. The long parts are anything the Colombian side adds, particularly convalidación of a degree and the official Spanish translation. Plan around the Colombian timeline, not ours, and start the recognition enquiry before the paperwork.
What do Colombia embassy attestation fees come to now?
There is no Colombian mission charge, so what remains is the Ministry's fixed statutory charge per document, the Notary and SDM stages, our handling and the courier. Translation is separate and is often the bigger number. Send a photograph of the document and you will get the whole thing quoted in writing before anything starts.
Is an Indian apostille valid across all of Colombia?
Yes. The Convention applies to the whole territory of the Republic of Colombia, so an apostille accepted in Bogotá is accepted in Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and Cartagena alike. Individual offices may have their own translation and recency preferences, which is a local practice question rather than a legalisation one.
